Chamber Hires Polly Trenor as Visitor Experience Representative

3/30/2022

Polly Trenor, Visitor Experience Rep
The Champaign County Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau team is growing. In the newly established position of Visitor Experience Representative, Polly Trenor, will promote and facilitate the services, events, and attractions that make Champaign County a great place to live, work and play.
Picture
Sara Neer, Executive Director of the Chamber, is looking forward to this new opportunity for Champaign County.
“We know that tourism plays an important role in the economics of our county and that role is going to continue to grow. In order for us to be able to continue that momentum, the Chamber Board of Directors and Visitors Bureau Committee saw a need to establish a position in our organization to focus solely on the promotion of local attractions, arts, history, and showcase the beauty of our area, in turn bringing more visitors to Champaign County. We are very fortunate that Polly Trenor is going to take on this role and we believe she will do a excellent job.”

Trenor, a graduate of Urbana High School and Otterbein University, resides in Urbana with her husband, Patrick, and their three daughters. She has been an educator for the past 14 years, most recently at Graham Local Schools as a vocal music teacher. She is a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Urbana and leads the choir on Sunday services. Polly says she is looking forward to “the opportunity to share my passion for my hometown with others.”

Barn Painting Demo at Champaign County Historical Society Museum

3/29/2022

Dr. Robert Kroeger, artist and writer
Dr. Robert Kroeger, artist and writer, will return to the Champaign County Historical Society Museum with his barn tales and a painting demo.
Artist and writer, Dr. Robert Kroeger will return to the Champaign County Historical Society Museum with his barn tales and a painting demonstration on April 28th at 3pm.

Viewed as a “Vanishing Landscape”, the historic barns of Ohio with their wooden nails, beams from nearby tress, and mortise-and-tenon joints display the unique carpentry of masterful barn builders. Many barns have stood for three centuries, but, sadly, a number of these barns, neglected for years, risk crumbling any day and vanishing from existence.
Dr. Kroeger sought to bring an awareness to and record the story of these historic structures. His project began with painting at least one barn in each of Ohio’s 88 counties and writing an essay about it. This project evolved into a book, Historic Barns of Ohio.
Picture
Continuing his work, Dr. Kroeger has offered fund raiser opportunities to historical societies in Ohio and the Champaign County Historical Society has invited him to share his barn stories and demonstrate his painting technique using palette knives and the impasto technique.

Following the demo painting, the painting will be raffled off with proceeds benefiting the CCHS.

Dr. Kroeger met with CCHS Board Trustee, Ken Wright, in January and toured Champaign County searching for old barns. From his photos taken that day, he painted thirteen Champaign County barns which were used for a 2023 Historic Barns of Champaign County calendar created by CCHS Board Trustee, Vince Gonzalez. The calendar will be unveiled at the meeting and available for purchase.

Following the program will be a book signing of Dr. Kroeger’s book, Historic Barns of Ohio and refreshments will be served.

The public is invited to attend. There is no admission charge for the event and participation in the raffle is entirely voluntary.
