From Springfield News Sun

The Clark State College Foundation is looking for community partners to mentor local young people and prepare them for college.
The Clark State Scholars program, which supports high school students in the Clark-Shawnee, Graham, Springfield, Tecumseh and Urbana school districts, give the business community an opportunity to become volunteer mentors, the college said in a release.

“As the Clark State Scholars program continues to grow, we are seeking volunteer mentors for our participating school districts,” said Karen Hunt, director of the program. “We recognize that the positive influences of mentors sharing their knowledge, giving constructive feedback and being a good listener is priceless. Our students strive academically and focus on pursuing their educational and career goals when they have mentor support.”

Mentors meet with students once a month for 45 minutes at their school.

Huntington National Bank is the first Springfield business to join the program. Philip Teusink, the bank’s community president and a former foundation board member, said they are proud to support the students.

“Their tenacity and commitment to education will lead them to be valuable leaders in the future,” he said. “We encourage our colleagues to mentor the students and are happy to help them achieve their dreams.”

Hunt said the community partners’ portion of the program was created to fulfill the need of encoring students to attend college. She said mentors are a huge part of the success of the program and help students develop critical skills for educational success, close opportunity gaps and develop skilled talent for the workforce.

The program, which launched in 2004, provides educational opportunities for low-income, first-generation students in the region, the release stated. Students accepted to the program receive educational and mentor support to prepare them for college. Students who complete the program receive a full scholarship for three years at Clark State.

For more information, contact Cameron Walker at 937-328-6458, walkerc@clarkstate.edu or visit the college’s website.

Picture
Cedar Bog Nature Preserve is partnering with The Ohio Natural Areas and Preserves Association (ONAPA) for several service days over the next few months.

The dates are:
Thursday, August 5
Tuesday, September 14
Tuesday, October 19

Cedar Bog Nature Preserve will be clearing trees and brush from several areas to allow for habitat restoration. Work will begin between 9:00am and 10:00am, and last until about 4:00pm.

Work gloves and knee high boots are recommended. If you have cutting tools: pruners, loppers, pruning saws and chain saws with proper PPE, bring them along. Some tools will be provided. Beverages will be provided.

There is a lot of work to be done. They do not expect to have everything cleared in just a couple of days. More service days and volunteer opportunities will follow.
So, if you are looking for a way to give back and help out, we can use all the help we can get. ONAPA is a hard working volunteer organization. They can get things done. The more hands on site, the more they can get done!

If you have any questions, please call 937-484-3744.

Volunteer for a team that delivers Meals-On-Wheels in the community!

LifeCare Alliance operates hot meal routes five days a week in Logan and Champaign counties with routes needing to be filled immediately. Individual and corporate volunteers are welcome.

The Adopt-a-Route program provides a unique outreach experience that doubles as an excellent team-building opportunity. Volunteers may adopt a route one day a week, one day a month, or any amount in between. Any level of participation will save LifeCare Alliance the cost of a paid driver.

When organizations and individuals volunteer to deliver Meals-on-Wheels, it makes a huge difference in the lives of people who are alone. For many of the clients, the Meals-on-Wheels delivery person is the only contact that they encounter all day.

To learn more about volunteering call 614-444-MEAL or email volunteer@lifecarealliance.org.

If you know someone that needs a meal call 614-278-3130.
